General Atomics announced on December 3, 2024, that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has selected the MQ-9B SeaGuardian for its Long Endurance UAV program. While the number of units remains undisclosed, the decision follows extensive JMSDF trials with the SeaGuardian since May 2023 under a MALE RPA evaluation project. The UAV has been tested for roles that could potentially replace manned aircraft operations.
