President Emmanuel Macron has indicated France’s willingness to engage with European partners on stationing French nuclear-capable warplanes abroad, echoing the US model of nuclear sharing. In an interview with TF1, Macron pointed out that the US keeps nuclear weapons in Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Turkey, and added, “We are ready to open that dialogue.” He said the terms would be clarified in the near future, but stressed three conditions: France would not finance the defense of others, it must not hinder France’s own military needs, and any deployment decision would ultimately be made by the president, as head of the armed forces.
