MBDA has secured a development contract to provide the Italian Army with a next-generation very short-range air defence (VSHORAD) system. The agreement, announced at the Paris Air Show (June 16-20, 2025), also introduced the system’s core missile: FULGUR, specifically designed to meet Italy’s air defence requirements.

FULGUR is a lightweight, man-portable, supersonic missile with fire-and-forget functionality and all-weather, day-night operational capability. Its advanced seeker with image processing technology can effectively neutralize modern threats, including small unmanned aerial systems, helicopters, and fighter jets. The system fully meets NATO standards, with first deliveries anticipated by early 2028.

MBDA plans to integrate FULGUR into SKY WARDEN, its adaptable counter-UAS solution, further expanding MBDA’s multi-layered European air defence offerings from VSHORAD up to anti-hypersonic and anti-ballistic capabilities.

FULGUR’s portability also provides a tactical edge when vehicle-mounted, and the system is compatible with existing platforms like the IDV VTLM2 with Leonardo turrets, 8×8 vehicles, and future automated turret systems. The missile is also designed for air-launch capabilities, making it suitable for deployment from helicopters.
