The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Italy involving Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) and associated equipment valued at $211 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has formally notified Congress of the proposed transaction.

Under the request, Italy seeks to acquire 30 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAMs, 40 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAMs, and 2 AIM-120C-7 guidance sections. The package also includes control section spares, containers, spare and repair parts, mission software, training services, publications, and U.S. contractor and government support.

The sale aligns with U.S. foreign policy and security goals by enhancing Italy’s defensive capabilities and promoting stability in Europe. The modernized air-to-air missiles will allow Italy to effectively address evolving aerial threats and strengthen NATO interoperability. Italy’s experience with AMRAAM systems ensures seamless integration of these new assets.

The sale will not affect the overall military balance in the region. RTX Corporation (Tucson, Arizona) will be the lead contractor. There are no known offset agreements associated with this proposed sale, and it does not require additional U.S. personnel in Italy.

The estimated value represents the highest projected cost based on initial planning. Final costs will depend on detailed contract negotiations and Italy’s final procurement decisions.
