The MTO-LP long-range loitering munition is being developed to serve both French and NATO forces with its high-mobility, long-distance strike capability. Offering a range of several hundred kilometers, expandable with future upgrades, this system is operationally ready within 30 minutes by a two-person team. It can launch up to 10 munitions simultaneously for complex, coordinated attacks and its modular, platform-neutral architecture reduces storage, transport, and logistical burdens, especially in forward-deployed settings.
The munition is optimized for precision engagements at extended ranges. The MTO-LP program targets a 2026 initial deployment with a planned production rate of 1,000 warheads per year. The roadmap includes significant upgrades by 2027, such as enhanced survivability, flexible mission sets, and diverse effectors to support long-range military operations. First flight tests are anticipated in summer 2025.
This initiative, driven by Thales in collaboration with Boreal, will bolster France’s defense industrial ecosystem, expand Boreal’s production capabilities, and unlock further defense cooperation opportunities in Belgium.
