The US Army has awarded FN America a $4.9 million contract for the delivery of M240L lightweight medium machine guns. Initially introduced in 2010 to offer a more durable, lightweight option, the M240L is 18% lighter than the M240B but retains comparable range and firepower. Its titanium construction trims around 5 pounds (2.2 kilograms) from the weapon’s weight. The M240L’s design is derived from the FN MAG 58, a long-serving general-purpose machine gun that has been in US military use since the 1970s and remains the core design of the M240 weapon family.
