BAE Systems has unveiled the M109A7 52-caliber self-propelled howitzer, which merges the proven M109A7 Paladin tracked chassis with Rheinmetall’s 155mm L52 cannon to deliver substantially greater range and firepower. Positioned as a rapid-response solution to the U.S. Army’s long-range fires gap following the ERCA program’s cancellation, the new design balances innovation with fleet compatibility.
The M109A7 platform, the latest in the Paladin lineage, continues to serve as the Army’s primary tracked howitzer for armored brigade combat teams. It offers enhanced mobility, survivability, and digital control systems while retaining logistical alignment with legacy 39-caliber systems. Built on a Bradley chassis, it features an electric gun drive, upgraded power generation, and diagnostic systems—establishing a future-ready foundation for next-generation artillery, including extended-range configurations like the 52-caliber variant.
