As part of its National Shipbuilding Strategy, Canada has commissioned Vancouver Shipyards and Chantier Davie Canada Inc. to begin development of new polar icebreakers for the coast guard. The initiative involves replacing older vessels, such as the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent, which has been in service since the 1960s. Vancouver Shipyards was awarded CAD 3.15 billion ($2.1 billion), and Chantier Davie received CAD 3.25 billion ($2.2 billion) for the construction of the next-generation icebreakers.
