Charles River Analytics has received a $1 million contract from the US Navy to develop an artificial intelligence-based system for detecting adversary submarines through their magnetic field disturbances. The Guidance for Naval Enhancement of Tactical Operations (MAGNETO) tool capitalizes on the magnetic distortions generated by the ferromagnetic construction of submarines, offering an alternative to traditional acoustic methods. Nevertheless, the firm emphasized that magnetic detection by itself is insufficient for comprehensive anti-submarine operations.
