Boeing has begun implementing the Increment 3 Block 2 upgrade on the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) P-8A Poseidon fleet, with the first aircraft undergoing modification at Boeing’s Jacksonville, Florida facility. The upgrade program aims to improve the Poseidon’s maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and reconnaissance capabilities. It introduces advanced sensors, antennas, and computing systems to support enhanced communication, data sharing, and onboard processing. Australia is the first international operator to receive the Increment 3 Block 2 configuration, underlining its strong defense collaboration with the United States. The AUD 139.5 million ($90.5 million) contract, awarded in 2024, includes the upgrade of several aircraft, the first two of which are being modified in the U.S., while remaining units will be upgraded by Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) in South Australia. BDA’s Deeper Maintenance & Modification Facility will handle future work, strengthening local industrial capacity and creating new employment opportunities. Over 30 apprentices have already joined BDA, with additional positions expected. The program supports Australia’s ongoing investment in high-end maritime patrol assets to reinforce national and regional security. The upgrades will align RAAF Poseidons with U.S. Navy configurations, ensuring sustained interoperability in coalition operations. The improvements will extend the aircraft’s operational life and effectiveness across ISR and maritime strike missions.
