HD Hyundai Heavy Industries revealed it has begun building the last of three next-generation Aegis destroyers for South Korea’s Korean Air and Missile Defense (KAMD) system. The groundbreaking for the third ship took place at Ulsan headquarters, with DAPA, DTaQ, and Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute officials present. Delivery to the Republic of Korea Navy is expected by late 2027. These new destroyers will offer major improvements over the Sejong the Great-class, including better ballistic missile interception and advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW), solidifying their role in South Korea’s maritime defense.
