HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has entered into a cooperative agreement with the Portuguese Navy aimed at the potential co-development of advanced small submarine platforms. The memorandum was formalized during the Marine Defense Exhibition 2025 (MADEX) held in Singapore. According to a report by the South Korean outlet Chosun, the agreement also outlines opportunities for cooperation in ship maintenance, repairs, and overhaul services. This strategic collaboration reflects Portugal’s ongoing efforts to expand its underwater capabilities. The Portuguese Navy currently operates two Tridente-class submarines, which were inducted into service in 2010 and weigh 2,000 tons each. The new initiative aims to either replicate these submarines or develop more compact variants. Insights from former naval chief Admiral Gouveia e Melo and current Admiral Jorge Nobre de Sousa suggest the navy is open to exploring varied specifications. The deal may pave the way for localized production, technology transfer, and enhanced maritime defense ties between Portugal and South Korea. This marks Hyundai’s latest step toward becoming a global player in advanced naval solutions.
