Navantia’s Cartagena shipyard has successfully installed a Hydrogen-based Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system into an S-80 class submarine, marking the first time a third-generation AIP has been integrated into a submarine. The achievement was commemorated with the presence of Spain’s National Armament Director, Admiral Aniceto Rosique Nieto. This milestone represents a major breakthrough in the S-80 Program and a historic first in Spanish shipbuilding. The advanced AIP technology will significantly enhance the Spanish Navy’s submarine endurance, allowing them to remain submerged for much longer durations than conventional diesel-electric submarines, which are typically limited to just a few days.
