Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, Chief of the Indian Navy, has confirmed that the ambitious Project-76 is progressing through its initial phase, focused on creating a fully indigenous class of conventional diesel-electric submarines. Seen as a landmark in India’s submarine-building journey, the project builds upon the technological foundation laid by Project-75 and Project-75I. The design stage is already underway, with the blueprint targeted for completion by 2028. Final approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security is expected by 2033–34, setting the stage for construction to commence. Marking a first for India, Project-76 will be entirely designed domestically, leveraging expertise gained from earlier collaborations. DRDO and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited are currently developing design proposals for evaluation by the Indian Navy.
