Rheinmetall has partnered with Italy under a memorandum of understanding to modernize a large portion of the Italian Army’s MATS anti-tank mine inventory.

The initiative, involving RWM Italia SpA and the Italian defence agency Agenzia Industrie Difesa, will upgrade the mines to the MK2 configuration through a combination of development, testing, and life-extension work.

The MATS MK2 variant introduces improved safety features and enhanced battlefield performance based on its reinforced blast-resistant design.

RWM Italia will lead the technical design and modification process, with production activities taking place at its Italian facilities, including operations in Brescia and Sardinia.

Work is set to begin within the next year, with the program also expected to support job creation in the domestic defense sector.
