The Indian Ministry of Defence has awarded a $248-million contract to Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport for the supply of upgraded engines for its T-72 Ural main battle tank fleet. The agreement includes the delivery of 1,000-horsepower power units to replace the original 780-horsepower engines installed in roughly 2,500 tanks that have been in service since the 1970s.
