The Republic of Korea Navy has chosen Rolls-Royce to supply the main propulsion systems for its Ulsan-class frigates, bringing the MT30 marine gas turbines and associated components onboard.
The deal includes controllable pitch propellers, diesel generators, and other hardware to power all six warships in the $3 billion naval modernization initiative launched by Seoul in 2021.
The first two ships will be assembled by Hanwha Ocean, while STX-Engines will partner in building electric motors powered by Rolls-Royce’s four-set diesel generator, which will be used at cruising speeds. The MT30 turbine will kick in during high-speed operations.
