In a major step to modernize its ground forces, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has approved the acquisition of 168 M109A7 155mm self-propelled howitzers from the United States, replacing its initial plan for just 40 units. This large-scale procurement, estimated at over NT$90 billion (roughly $2.75 billion USD), also includes an undisclosed number of M992A3 ammunition resupply vehicles, designed on the same upgraded chassis as the M109A7 to enhance interoperability and logistical efficiency. The M109A7—developed through the U.S. Army’s PIM initiative—offers advanced mobility, digital targeting systems, robust power upgrades, and better crew protection. These systems are set to significantly increase the Republic of China Army’s firepower, responsiveness, and operational endurance in modern combat environments. The howitzers’ compatibility with current artillery networks and logistics systems will further improve Taiwan’s battlefield resilience.
