The US Navy has officially commissioned the USS Nantucket (LCS 27), the 14th Freedom-class littoral combat ship, during a ceremony in Boston, Massachusetts. This follows the ship’s successful acceptance trials in 2022 and its delivery in July 2024. Built by Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri Marinette Marine, construction began in 2017 as part of the Department of Defense’s initiative to modernize its naval fleet. The USS Nantucket is the third vessel to carry the name, following a Civil War-era coastal monitor and a gunboat from the early 1910s later repurposed as a maritime training vessel.
