BAE Systems has signed a development agreement with the US Army to fast-track the 52-caliber M109 self-propelled howitzer prototype.
The collaboration, formalized under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the US Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center (DEVCOM-AC), focuses on advancing the upgraded system.
The M109-52 is a modernized version of the M109A7, equipped with the Rheinmetall L52 155mm, 52-caliber cannon.
The project gains importance after the Army scrapped its Extended Range Cannon Artillery program, which had aimed for a 58-caliber solution but faced setbacks due to barrel durability issues. The M109-52 now stands as a key contender for fulfilling the Army’s long-range precision artillery goals.
