The US Department of Defense has launched a new initiative focused on assessing and safeguarding the cognitive health of military personnel. Known as the Cognitive Monitoring Program, the project aims to monitor how troops think, learn, and process information throughout their careers.
The program evaluates 10 key areas of cognitive function—such as memory, focus, and decision-making—using a computer-based system. Additionally, it includes a questionnaire addressing psychological factors like mood, sleep patterns, PTSD, and traumatic brain injury. Service members are assessed early in their careers to create a cognitive baseline, with regular follow-ups every five years or after significant events. The ultimate goal is to promote long-term brain health and ensure operational readiness.
