Approximately 3,000 members of the Somali National Army have completed training at the Xananbuure military camp in Galgadud, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to expand and professionalize its armed forces. The graduates came from Somalia’s federal member states and underwent almost twelve months of instruction. The curriculum included military discipline, basic tactical skills, weapons training, legal education, and other core elements of soldier preparation. The program was supported financially by Saudi Arabia and included instructors from Ukraine, Romania, and Sudan. It originated from an agreement reached earlier in the year under which up to 5,000 Somali personnel could receive military training. The graduation ceremony brought together senior representatives from Somalia’s federal and regional administrations as well as Saudi military officials involved in the initiative. The large number of graduates reflects Somalia’s continuing effort to increase the size and capability of its national security forces. Since the collapse of the central government in 1991, the country has faced significant challenges in rebuilding unified national institutions, including the armed forces.International training partnerships have become an important part of that rebuilding process. Foreign instructors can provide specialized experience while supporting the development of standardized military procedures and professional standards among Somali personnel. The latest class adds a substantial number of trained soldiers to the national force and could help strengthen Somalia’s ability to manage security responsibilities independently over time. The initiative also demonstrates the continued involvement of international partners in Somalia’s security-sector development. Future training and institutional programs are likely to remain important as the country works toward building a more capable and sustainable national defense structure.
