The future of aircraft launch technology aboard US Navy carriers could change after President Donald Trump directed officials to pursue a return to traditional steam-powered catapults on future vessels.The proposal would move away from the EMALS technology currently installed on the Gerald R. Ford-class carrier fleet. EMALS uses electromagnetic force generated by a linear induction motor to accelerate aircraft from the flight deck.Trump has repeatedly criticized the electromagnetic system and has expressed support for older steam and hydraulic technologies. The new directive calls for the Pentagon to develop an implementation plan within two months, with the USS Doris Miller and later carriers identified as potential candidates for the change.Existing Ford-class ships that already have EMALS installed would not necessarily be modified. This distinction could limit some immediate disruption but would still create significant challenges for vessels currently being designed or constructed around an all-electric architecture.Defense analysts have warned that replacing EMALS with steam equipment could introduce major engineering complications. The Navy would need to adapt ship systems, restore industrial capacity for steam catapult components, and manage additional costs and schedule pressures.General Atomics, which has been developing and installing EMALS, has argued that changing the system during construction could create significant integration risks. Supporters of the electromagnetic approach also point to advantages in aircraft handling and reduced manpower requirements.The controversy highlights the difficult balance between adopting new technologies and relying on systems with long operational histories.
