HD Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea has entered into a framework agreement with Peru’s SIMA shipyard to co-develop and produce submarines for the Peruvian Navy.

The two sides intend to finalize a full-scale contract by year-end, with the vessels to be built at Hyundai’s Ulsan facility in southern Korea.

This partnership follows an earlier joint development project to design a 1,500-ton class submarine that will replace Peru’s long-serving Type 209 diesel-electric fleet, some of which have been in operation for over 40 years.

Peru currently operates six Type 209 submarines, including two Type 209/1100s and four Type 209/1200s, forming the core of its undersea force.

The submarine program underscores Peru’s broader naval modernization drive, under which it is also collaborating with HD Hyundai on frigates, patrol vessels, and amphibious support platforms to boost its regional maritime strength.
