Northrop Grumman and California-based defense technology company Picogrid have announced a collaboration to modernize U.S. military air defense software.

Under the partnership, Picogrid will integrate its Legion software into Northrop Grumman’s AiON system, enabling operators to remotely manage multiple sites and respond more quickly to threats ranging from inexpensive drones to faster weapons like cruise missiles and loitering munitions.

The move supports the Pentagon’s push for open, modular platforms that reduce costs, speed deployment, and enhance interoperability. It also aligns with recent efforts such as the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (2022) and the Artificial Intelligence Rapid Capabilities Cell (2024) to accelerate software integration and field emerging technologies more rapidly.
