BAE Systems Hägglunds has entered into an agreement with Rheinmetall to integrate the L44A1 120-millimeter low-recoil cannon onto the new CV90120 light tank.
The CV90120, derived from BAE Systems’ CV90 infantry fighting vehicle, is based on the latest MkIV chassis, featuring a more powerful engine, reinforced transmission, and advanced digital architecture. It is also equipped with active protection systems designed to counter modern battlefield threats.
This upgraded configuration allows operators of existing CV90 fleets to benefit from shared training, logistics, and spare parts, improving interoperability among allied forces.
Rheinmetall’s L44A1 represents an enhanced version of its renowned 120mm smoothbore gun, originally based on the L/44 design used on platforms such as the Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams. Measuring 44 calibers (around 5 meters), the L44A1 incorporates recoil-mitigation technologies, including a muzzle brake, enabling effective use on lighter tracked platforms without loss of accuracy or lethality.
The system remains fully compatible with NATO-standard 120mm ammunition, such as programmable high-explosive and kinetic-energy projectiles.
