The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) and Hanwha Aerospace have launched a joint research center to develop advanced materials for aircraft engines.
Located in Changwon, the facility aims to localize production of critical engine materials, reducing South Korea’s reliance on imports.
The center will focus on forging and heat-resistant coating technologies for nickel- and titanium-based alloys used in aircraft and unmanned aerial systems.
KIMS contributes cutting-edge testing infrastructure, including ultra-high-temperature testing and full-cycle R&D-to-production capabilities.
Hanwha showcased its self-developed turbofan at Farnborough 2024, designed for the KF-21 and future UAVs, delivering 15,000 pounds of thrust—targeted to eventually replace the F414 engine.
