Sweden has announced plans to invest 15 billion kronor ($1.6 billion) to strengthen its air defense capabilities, with a particular focus on protecting civilian and other critical infrastructure targets.
The funding will be directed toward ground-based air defense systems, reflecting Europe’s broader push to increase military spending following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and amid evolving transatlantic security dynamics.
Citing lessons from the conflict in Ukraine, the Swedish government emphasized the critical role of resilient air defense systems in modern warfare.
The announcement mirrors similar initiatives across Europe, including Germany’s decision in December to approve $59 billion in additional defense spending.
According to the government, initial procurements under Sweden’s air defense investment plan are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
