Leonardo has completed the €1.6-billion ($1.8-billion) acquisition of Iveco Group’s defense business, reinforcing its expansion into the land systems segment.

The transaction brings Iveco Defence Vehicles and ASTRA into Leonardo’s fold, enhancing its portfolio with advanced wheeled and tracked platforms alongside its established capabilities in electronics, sensors, and mission systems. The move aligns with Leonardo’s strategy to become a comprehensive, vertically integrated player in land defense.

Through the integration of vehicle platforms with command-and-control systems, electro-optical solutions, and turret technologies, the company intends to offer fully integrated battlefield solutions. Combined operational footprints and sales channels are also expected to boost market reach, particularly in international markets.

The acquisition further expands Leonardo’s industrial footprint, improving manufacturing and logistics capacity while enabling joint innovation in future land warfare technologies.

Across the defense industry, consolidation trends continue to accelerate. AeroVironment’s acquisition of BlueHalo in 2025 and Empirical Systems Aerospace in 2026, along with Uvision Group’s purchase of SpearUAV, highlight the growing emphasis on capability expansion and supply chain integration in the sector.
