Sweden’s government has announced an investment exceeding $900 million to strengthen its air and counter-drone defense capabilities. The funding will support a range of systems, including radar networks, anti-aircraft weapons, and electronic warfare platforms, as part of a broader effort to enhance national security.

The 8.7 billion kronor ($916 million) package represents more than half of the air defense funding initiative unveiled earlier in January. Authorities confirmed that contracts have already been signed with key industry players, including Saab and BAE Systems Bofors, the Swedish arm of the UK-based BAE Systems.

Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027, a timeline described as relatively fast given the current strain on Europe’s defense industrial base amid rising demand. Swedish officials also emphasized the need for Europe to take on greater responsibility for its own defense, even as transatlantic partnerships remain intact.
