The US State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System–Alternative Warheads (GMLRS-AW) to Singapore. The proposed deal, valued at $83.14 million, includes the supply of 45 M30A2 GMLRS-AW pods manufactured by Lockheed Martin, along with telemetry kits, engineering support, technical assistance, and associated logistics services.
According to official notifications, the sale is intended to enhance Singapore’s ability to deter regional threats, improve interoperability with allied forces, and contribute to broader regional stability.
The GMLRS-AW system is compatible with both the wheeled M142 HIMARS and the tracked M270 launcher platforms. Singapore currently operates around 24 M142 HIMARS units, which are undergoing upgrades to integrate more advanced rocket systems, as outlined by the country’s defense ministry in March 2025.
Analysts suggest these upgrades could enable the deployment of extended-range munitions such as the GMLRS-ER, capable of reaching up to 150 kilometers, and the Precision Strike Missile, with a range of approximately 400 to 500 kilometers. In comparison, the GMLRS-AW offers a range exceeding 70 kilometers.
The guided rocket is equipped with a 200-pound-class fragmentation warhead that disperses approximately 160,000 preformed tungsten fragments, allowing it to effectively engage area targets such as infantry units, light vehicles, and air defense systems while reducing collateral damage.
