The US Army has awarded a contract worth nearly $640 million to Global Military Products for the procurement of 155mm High Explosive rounds, reinforcing the Special Ammunition and Weapons Systems (SAWS) program. The firm-fixed-price deal, valid until July 10, 2027, ranks among the Army’s largest munitions acquisitions this year.

The SAWS initiative focuses on sourcing ammunition and weapons systems that lack full Army safety testing or type classification. Many of these “non-standard” systems are legacy platforms used by partner nations, especially those originating from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc. By supplying such munitions, the Army ensures interoperability with allied forces while maintaining safety oversight.

This latest contract guarantees a steady flow of artillery ammunition at a time of rising operational demand. According to Army officials, monthly production of 155mm shells increased to 40,000 in July, up from 15,000 in 2022, with a goal of reaching 100,000 rounds per month by mid-2026.

In a parallel effort, the Army awarded MSM Group North America a contract in August to build the Future Artillery Complex, a cornerstone of the Department of Defense’s modernization strategy to strengthen the aging munitions industrial base and replenish stocks.
