The Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated a major push toward self-reliance in sustaining its Rafale fleet by issuing an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the indigenous development of critical ground support systems. Released under Tender ID 2026 IAF 755203 1, the initiative calls for the design and local production of 18 lines of Tools, Testers, and Ground Equipment (TTGE) tailored specifically for Rafale aircraft in service.

Aligned with India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, the move aims to reduce dependence on foreign vendors for high-value maintenance infrastructure. The TTGE lines include advanced diagnostic tools, automated testing systems, and ground support equipment required to maintain key subsystems such as avionics, the RBE2 AESA radar, mission computers, and weapon interfaces. By localizing these capabilities, the IAF expects faster maintenance turnaround, reduced lifecycle costs, and improved operational readiness without relying heavily on imported spares or external technical support.

The tender, issued from Air Force Station Ojhar in Nashik—a key aerospace maintenance hub—was released on March 5, 2026, with submissions closing on March 27 and bid opening scheduled the next day. The compressed timeline underscores the urgency of building domestic capabilities as the Rafale fleet plays a central role in India’s air defense posture amid evolving regional challenges.

Notably, this EOI is separate from the proposed procurement of 114 additional Rafale jets under the MRFA programme, which involves large-scale acquisition and local manufacturing. Instead, the TTGE initiative focuses on long-term sustainment of the 36 Rafale aircraft already inducted since 2020. By enabling domestic production of essential support infrastructure, the IAF aims to strengthen supply chain resilience and foster growth within India’s aerospace industry. Successful execution could also pave the way for similar indigenization efforts across other imported defense platforms.
