Japan has put forward a modernized variant of its Mogami-class frigate for Australia’s upcoming general-purpose warship acquisition, highlighting compatibility with US systems to enhance trilateral naval cooperation.

The offering from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is among two contenders shortlisted for Australia’s A$10 billion ($6.62 billion) frigate program, alongside Germany’s MEKO A-200 by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems.

Designed to replace the aging Anzac-class fleet, the new ships will support escort operations, air defense, and surface warfare. Australia plans to procure 11 frigates, with three built overseas and the remaining eight constructed locally, and will announce the final selection by late 2025.
