L3Harris and Joby Aviation Collaborate on Hybrid VTOL for Defense Applications

L3Harris Technologies and Joby Aviation are developing an advanced vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft equipped with hybrid piloting capabilities—allowing for both human and autonomous control. The aircraft, intended for low-altitude support missions, will be powered by a gas turbine engine to provide flexible deployment options across operational scenarios.

The collaboration draws on L3Harris’ domain expertise in mission systems, sensors, and unmanned technologies, paired with Joby’s background in lightweight airframe design and electric aircraft innovation. The upcoming aircraft is expected to evolve from Joby’s S4 platform.

Testing of the prototype is set to begin this fall, with full demonstrations to follow in 2026. Joby, already working closely with the US Department of Defense, is simultaneously progressing toward FAA certification for its commercial VTOL aircraft and has scaled up operations at its California manufacturing facility.
