A NATO AWACS aircraft has carried out its first operational surveillance mission over Finnish territory, supporting the alliance’s air monitoring and command-and-control operations in Northern Europe.

The mission contributed to NATO’s situational awareness in the High North and along its eastern flank. It was coordinated by Joint Force Command Norfolk and executed under the tasking of NATO Allied Air Command.

As part of the exercise, eight Finnish F/A-18 fighter jets participated in a four-on-four aerial training scenario directed by the AWACS aircraft. Acting as an airborne command platform, the system managed the battlespace, supervised the activity, and maintained a comprehensive tactical air picture.

AWACS aircraft play a key role in strengthening interoperability by integrating airborne sensor data with national command networks, providing commanders with real-time information about air activity across extensive operational areas.

During the operation, the aircraft flew within Finland’s civilian-controlled airspace while maintaining coordination between NATO military forces and national aviation authorities.

The mission was carried out in coordination with Finland’s Control and Reporting Centre in Rovaniemi and the Air Operations Centre in Jyväskylä, ensuring seamless cooperation between NATO command structures and Finnish air defense organizations.
