Sweden is advancing plans to localize maintenance for its future frigates following a partnership agreement between Naval Group and Oresund Drydocks AB to establish a domestic support capability.

Under the agreement, Naval Group will collaborate with Oresund Drydocks to deliver maintenance and service support for the Defense and Intervention Frigate (FDI) fleet, with the first vessel potentially entering Swedish service by 2030.

The partnership centers on comprehensive through-life support, transfer of technical expertise, and maintaining operational readiness, while also reinforcing Sweden’s national defense industrial base. Guillaume Weisrock, Vice President for Sales and Business Development for Europe and North America at Naval Group, stated that the cooperation is designed to promote innovation, generate high-value employment, and strengthen Sweden’s strategic sovereignty over its FDI fleet.

Naval Group plans to facilitate technology and skills transfer to Sweden’s maritime industry, enhancing both operational capability and long-term industrial resilience.

In recent years, Naval Group has expanded its local industrial footprint in several countries to support frigate programs. In 2025, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Westcon Naval Shipyard in Norway to help develop a Norwegian frigate sustainment ecosystem.

In late 2024, Naval Group also broadened collaboration with Greek industry and the University of Patras, creating frameworks for research cooperation, technology development, and preparation for future frigate support.

Outside Europe, Naval Group continues to strengthen its presence in Saudi Arabia through its Riyadh-based subsidiary, Naval Group Arabia, supporting local partnerships, technology transfer, and fleet sustainment initiatives aligned with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objectives.
