Madrid-based Indra Group and South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop self-propelled artillery systems for the Spanish Armed Forces.
The agreement focuses on creating a new family of tracked artillery platforms derived from Hanwha’s K9 Thunder 155mm howitzer. It also includes technology transfer provisions to support local design and production, strengthening Spain’s domestic defense manufacturing base within NATO.
Spain’s artillery modernization plan, revealed in July 2025, outlines the procurement of 128 tracked systems, 120 ammunition resupply vehicles, 11 command and control units, and 21 recovery platforms.
‘Real Sovereignty’
Under the partnership, Indra will produce vehicle hulls domestically and integrate its proprietary systems, including mission control, 360-degree situational awareness, battlefield management, and communications solutions.
The company will also develop advanced command post systems with integrated protection features. The resulting platforms are expected to offer high levels of automation, long-range precision strike capability, and reduced crew requirements, delivering reliable and future-ready solutions for Spain’s armed forces.
