Sweden has entered into a pre-design agreement with HB Utveckling AB — a joint venture between BAE Systems Hägglunds and Bofors — to initiate a comprehensive life-extension program for all versions of the Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90).

The contract, worth approximately 335 million Swedish kronor ($37.8 million), includes the development of technical upgrade packages, production of prototypes, procurement of equipment, and activities to prepare for full-scale manufacturing.

The program is set to run through 2031, with the objective of keeping the CV90 fleet operational until at least 2045.

Strengthening Armored Capabilities

The initiative reflects Sweden’s broader strategy of maintaining and enhancing its existing armored vehicle fleet while simultaneously expanding ground combat capabilities through new acquisitions.

In December, Sweden placed an order for 94 additional Patria 6×6 armored vehicles under a contract valued at roughly 1.5 billion kronor ($159.8 million). This procurement will increase the Swedish Armed Forces’ Patria 6×6 fleet to 415 vehicles, with deliveries continuing through 2030.

Earlier, Stockholm also signed an agreement with KNDS Germany to upgrade and supply Leopard 2 main battle tanks. The deal includes the modernization of 66 in-service Leopard 2 tanks and the delivery of 44 newly manufactured Leopard 2A8 variants.

These measures follow a previous 3.5 billion kronor ($316 million) contract awarded to Krauss-Maffei Wegmann to upgrade Sweden’s Leopard 2 fleet, incorporating improved electronic systems, new night-vision sights, and a thermal imaging camera for drivers.
