A group of Chinese researchers has reported progress on what they describe as a “smart surface” capable of converting ambient electromagnetic waves into usable electrical power.

The concept merges advanced communications technology with electromagnetic engineering, with potential applications spanning intelligent stealth platforms and future 6G networks. By combining wireless data transmission with energy harvesting, the system also points to possible uses in electronic warfare environments.

Designed as an integrated device that combines sensing, communications, and self-generated power, the smart surface is intended to support high-demand operations while maintaining resilience against jamming and interference. The research team said the technology could ultimately influence a wide range of fields, including 6G communications, the Internet of Things, and intelligent stealth systems.

As the architecture matures, the scientists believe it could enable more advanced, efficient, and reliable robotic and autonomous operations, marking a new phase in the evolution of connected intelligent systems.

In an aviation context, the team suggests the technology could help stealth aircraft reduce detectability while maintaining seamless coordination with other platforms. Rather than merely avoiding hostile radar, future aircraft could potentially harvest energy from radar emissions themselves, using those signals for both power generation and communications.

The approach may also reshape satellite communications by supporting self-powered sensors, compact base stations, and integrated relay nodes. Looking ahead, the researchers envision adaptive environments that fuse sensing and communications with self-sustaining energy systems.
