Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) has successfully conducted the first crewed live-fire trial of the Challenger 3, marking a major milestone toward the British Army’s fielding of its next-generation main battle tank.

The trials, held at a Ministry of Defence training facility, represented the first time in more than three decades that a newly developed main battle tank has fired in the UK.

Testing followed a phased process, beginning with remotely operated firings before progressing to live firing by RBSL crews.

Challenger 3 is equipped with Rheinmetall’s 120mm L55A1 smoothbore cannon, capable of firing advanced kinetic-energy anti-tank rounds as well as programmable multipurpose ammunition.

The platform constitutes a substantial leap over the Challenger 2, delivering improvements in lethality, survivability, and digital integration. The new smoothbore gun enables the use of modern penetrators with enhanced armor-defeat performance, while multipurpose munitions expand mission flexibility.

Modernization measures also include upgraded sensors, digital battlefield management systems, and reinforced armor to protect crews against contemporary threats.

Further trials are planned as Challenger 3 moves toward operational service. Production is ongoing at RBSL’s Telford facility, with 148 upgraded tanks scheduled for delivery under the British Army’s wider modernization program aimed at sustaining the UK’s combat edge.

The £800-million ($1.07-billion) contract has supported 300 skilled jobs at RBSL and created a further 450 roles across the UK supply chain, including contributions from small and medium-sized enterprises nationwide.
