South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem has launched the development of its next-gen K3 main battle tank, intended as the successor to the highly regarded K2 and powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Developed with support from key national defense institutions, the K3 will first employ a hybrid hydrogen-diesel engine, with a full transition to hydrogen propulsion planned in later stages.

The integration of hydrogen fuel cells is expected to bring notable benefits—including quieter operation, lower thermal output, greater fuel economy, and enhanced off-road performance, all contributing to simplified logistics and maintenance.
