India’s Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) is advancing the development of nuclear reactors capable of generating 200 MWe (megawatt electric), designed to extend the underwater endurance of the nation’s next-generation submarines.
These pressurized light-water reactors, powered by enriched uranium, are expected to operate for up to a decade without requiring refueling.
Tailored for the S5-class submarines, which can carry as many as 16 ballistic missiles, the 200-MWe reactors can also be adapted to deliver steady power during stealth missions.
