Leonardo is aiming to reshape military pilot training with FITS4TOP (Future Integrated Training System for TOP Pilots), a next-generation simulation environment that merges live flight operations with virtual training.
The system combines advanced hardware, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and modern avionics to enhance Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) training. It enables real aircraft to operate in the same mission space as simulators and computer-generated forces, creating integrated training scenarios across air, maritime, and land domains.
In operational use, pilots can fly live sorties while encountering simulated threats, supported by high-performance computing and secure digital networks. At the same time, trainees can interact in real time with instructors and fellow pilots operating from simulators, progressing through increasingly complex mission profiles.
The system continuously gathers data from both real-world flights and simulated events, which is then analyzed and fed through ground-based controllers working in close coordination with aircraft during close-support and mission rehearsal activities.
