Russia is moving forward with plans to replace its aging Mi-8/17 helicopters by developing a new multirole platform, identified as the Mi-80, according to Russian media outlets.

Inspired by the Mi-171A3, the Mi-80 will incorporate a range of upgrades, including a modernized aerodynamic profile, newly designed blades, and powerful new engines to meet the demands of today’s airspace.

Assembly will be overseen by the Kazan Helicopter Plant and Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant—long-time producers of the Mi-8 series—while efforts are being made to reduce production costs.

The aircraft will reportedly feature a 14-ton maximum takeoff weight, a strengthened fuselage, and components made from lightweight composite materials. Enhanced safety features include impact-protected fuel tanks and optimized rotor placement to improve in-flight performance and maneuverability.

Currently, the Mi-80 remains in the technical planning stage as financial challenges are addressed. Once funding is allocated, development is expected to take approximately five years.

Russia’s military still operates over 700 Mi-8/17 helicopters, with another 800-plus in service with other government sectors. Globally, the Mi-8/17 platform remains one of the most widely used helicopters, with around 3,000 units in operation worldwide.
