South Korea is moving ahead with a long-term modernization plan for the KF-21 Boramae, its next-generation fighter jet, with a focus on stealth and advanced mission systems. Developed by Korea Aerospace Industries, the aircraft incorporates semi-stealth features and is set to finish development in 2026.

A 630-billion-won ($453 million) Block III upgrade package will significantly boost survivability by adding stealth coatings, advanced sensors, and a new internal weapons bay. Expected in the early 2030s, the bay will reportedly carry four Meteor missiles or precision-guided munitions while concealing weapons from radar detection. Electronic-warfare systems will also be integrated inside the fuselage to further reduce the jet’s radar signature.

Prior to this, Block II upgrades will introduce indigenous engine development and air-to-ground capabilities, with a budget of 86 billion won ($62 million). The new engine is intended to replace the GE F414 turbofan, while strike capability is scheduled to be fielded by 2027.

Additional advancements include the adoption of Hanwha’s AESA radar and the integration of loyal wingman drones, ensuring the KF-21 evolves into a more versatile, future-ready combat platform.
