The United Kingdom has launched Project Nightfall, a new initiative to develop ground-launched tactical ballistic missiles for Ukraine aimed at strengthening long-range strike capabilities against Russian forces.
The missiles are intended to carry a 200-kilogram (440-pound) high-explosive warhead and engage targets at ranges beyond 500 kilometers (310 miles), even in heavily contested environments characterized by electronic jamming and electromagnetic interference.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the Nightfall system will be mobile and highly adaptable, capable of launching from multiple vehicle platforms, firing several missiles in quick succession, and redeploying within minutes. This flexibility is designed to enable Ukrainian forces to strike high-value targets before Russian units can react.
The program emphasizes rapid prototyping and scalable manufacturing, with an initial production objective of up to 10 systems per month and a maximum unit cost capped at £800,000 ($1.07 million) per missile.
Project Nightfall builds on existing allied support for Ukraine, including the provision of long-range strike drones, and will also inform future long-range strike capability requirements for the UK armed forces.
Under the initiative, three industry teams will each receive £9 million ($12.1 million) development contracts to design, build, and deliver three prototype missiles within 12 months for initial test firings.
Detailed requirements were provided to selected industry partners last month, with development proposals due by February 9. Contract awards are expected in March.
The UK remains one of Ukraine’s leading military supporters, having committed billions of pounds in aid since Russia’s invasion in 2022. London has pledged £3 billion ($4 billion) annually in support to Kyiv “for as long as it takes,” alongside additional financial mechanisms and defense cooperation programs.
Beyond direct military assistance, the UK and Ukraine are expanding collaboration on joint defense production and technology development, including initiatives focused on drone manufacturing.
