The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported Sunday that Israeli forces fired on its peacekeepers from a tank near an army position in southern Lebanon. UNIFIL, working alongside the Lebanese army to uphold the truce between Israel and Hezbollah established last November, said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted its personnel from a Merkava tank, with heavy machine gun rounds landing just five meters away. Peacekeepers were able to leave safely about thirty minutes later after the tank withdrew. UNIFIL condemned the attack as a serious violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war and underpins the recent ceasefire. The incident marks another instance of UNIFIL accusing Israel of endangering peacekeepers, with the force urging the IDF to halt aggressive actions near its personnel.
