Elbit Systems has been awarded a substantial $210-million modernization contract to upgrade Israel’s Merkava battle tank fleet, representing one of the most significant overhauls undertaken in years. Over the next six years, the company will replace legacy electronic systems and integrate next-generation technologies designed to enhance firepower, survivability, and real-time battlefield awareness.
Central to the upgrade package are new AI-enabled electro-optical sighting systems that deliver all-around situational awareness in both day and night conditions. These systems provide advanced target detection and automatic tracking features to help crews respond faster to emerging threats. Elbit will also supply comprehensive logistical and maintenance support, ensuring the armored units maintain readiness throughout the program.
The Merkava, first introduced in the 1970s, continues to serve as Israel’s premier main battle tank and has evolved through several iterations up to the latest Merkava Barak configuration. Renowned for its unique front-engine layout, multi-layered protection suite, and battlefield endurance, the tank is built to withstand high-intensity operations. The newly announced upgrades will help the platform adapt to modern combat challenges, including drone swarms, electronic warfare environments, and degraded visual conditions.
This modernization effort fits within Israel’s broader defense strategy to strengthen its armored forces amid escalating regional tensions. In August 2025, the government announced a $1.5-billion initiative to accelerate production of armored platforms and associated systems. Complementing this, the Ministry of Defense recently granted $155 million to a Rafael-Elbit joint venture to expand domestic production of advanced infrared sensor technologies, supporting ISR missions across air, ground, and space domains and enhancing the IDF’s overall targeting capability.
