Battelle has been awarded a Scientific and Technical Engagement Partnership (STEP) 2.0 contract by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency to lead a key biological threat mitigation program.

The contract includes a $52.9 million base period and could reach a total value of $93.3 million if all options are exercised. STEP 2.0 operates under DTRA’s Global Threat Reduction Directorate, which focuses on countering weapons of mass destruction — including chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats — often in collaboration with allied partners.

Through the agreement, Battelle will enhance US biodefense capabilities by advancing scientific and technical solutions designed to address both existing and emerging biological risks, strengthening overall force readiness.

Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle is a nonprofit research and development organization providing technical services to government and commercial clients across national security, healthcare, energy, and environmental domains.

Recent defense-related efforts include participation in a $25.35 billion ceiling technology support contract for the US Department of Defense covering electronics and software development. The organization also provides long-term CBRN testing, management, laboratory, and training support at the US Army’s Dugway Proving Ground.

In December, Battelle took part in a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) challenge focused on drone-enabled medical care operations, supporting Pentagon efforts to explore human-machine triage concepts for large-scale casualty scenarios.
